Opening Day for the 2018 MLS Draft League started off hot for the Rays as they took an early 5-1 lead in the second inning over the Mac's Seafood Mariners (1-0). That lead would soon go away as the Mariners put up big offensive middle innings, putting the Rays in a tough spot and sealing the victory with the score of 19-7. OF Johnny Alexander picked up where he left off last year, going 4-5 with 2 RBI (2) and 4 runs scored. A nearby scout said that J5 ran the bases in 4.5 seconds, improving from last year's time. The Rays were led by Haskell (2-2 with a walk), and Heron (also 2-2). The Mariners offense (26 combined hits) was also led by 1B Zack Timmermeyer (3-4, HR (1), 4 RBI (4), 2 R, BB), OF Chris Larsen (3-4, 2 R, RBI (1), SS Cody Marean (3-5, 2B, 3 R, RBI (1), and OF Jimmy Childs (3-3, RBI (1). Pitcher Pat Sullivan picked up the first win for the Mariners by going a complete game and only allowing 7 runs. Next week, the Rays (0-1) will face the Phillies (0-0), while the Mariners will host the Royals (0-1) under the lights at Pettengill Park.
